What is TFN?

TFN stands for tobacco free nicotine. It is synthetic nicotine that is made in a lab and does not use tobacco. TFN was discovered in the 1960s by the tobacco industry but it proved to be much more expensive to manufacture than traditional nicotine or nicotine derived from tobacco so it was abandoned. However, in the middle of 2021 many vape juice manufacturers started using synthetic nicotine, and many more will follow. But why is this happening? And is this a good thing for vaping?

Why are We Starting to See More TFN Products?

We are seeing more vaping products using TFN  because synthetic nicotine has provided vape juice manufacturers with an out from the jurisdiction of the FDA, or so it seems. Now that the Premarket Tobacco Product Applications (PMTA) are in full motion, we are seeing more and more vape companies and e-liquid manufacturers receiving Marketing Denial Orders (MDOs), effectively taking away their permission to manufacture and sell their products in the United States.

However, the vape industry has a found legal grey area in which the jurisdiction of the FDA is in question, and this area is where synthetic and TFN nicotine lives. Because the government gave the FDA permission to oversee and regulate all tobacco derived products including vaping products, there is nothing written in the legislation that talks about non-tobacco derived products. And since synthetic nicotine is not made from tobacco, many have argued that it falls out of the jurisdiction of the FDA and therefore can not be regulated by the FDA, giving e-liquid manufacturers free rein of the market once more.

However, it should be stated that the FDA knows of the existence of TFN and synthetic nicotine and they insist that they do have jurisdiction over it. In a FAQ found on their website they state that TFN “may still be subjected to FDA regulation” but they also state disposables that use synthetic nicotine will be judged on a case by case basis, meaning some will not need FDA regulation.

As of now it seems that the FDA has not issued a statement about the new wave of synthetic nicotine products that have overtaken the market. They also have not clarified their position, which is why so many vaping manufacturers are taking the leap of faith and turning their product lines into synthetic nicotine products.

What are the Differences Between Nicotine Derived From Tobacco and TFN?

One of the most important differences between nicotine derived from tobacco and synthetic nicotine is the price it costs to manufacture. Synthetic nicotine is overwhelmingly more expensive according to one of its manufacturers, being around “...three to four times the current cost of tobacco-derived nicotine.”

Manufacturers of TFN have also gone on record saying that because it does not have the “residual impurities” of tobacco-derived from nicotine, which uses chemicals and other solvents to extract the nicotine from the plant, synthetic nicotine provides a much better flavor because it is purer and allows for the natural and artificial flavorings added to vape juice to really shine through. They also state that it is odorless, which creates a purer scent that also contributes to the overall vaping experience.

Besides this, synthetic nicotine and tobacco-derived nicotine are virtually indistinguishable due to their similar chemical structure.
