What Are Keywords and Keyword Research?

Keywords are the words being used to search for a specific topic or item. In our case, it’s the phrases, sentences, or words people use on search engines to look for vape shops or vape goods. And keyword research is the act of uncovering these keywords for the purpose of using them in search engine optimization (SEO) so you can include them in your blogs, product description, and pages on your website. This ensures that the next time a person uses those keywords or phrases in their search for a vape shop, your store appears in the search engines.

Step 1. Start by Brainstorming Keywords

Believe it or not, brainstorming is the first step when it comes to coming up with keywords that people are actively using. The first order of business is to think from the point of view of your customers. What are some of the topics they would use if they were trying to get to a vape store or find one online? You might come up with the following topics:

  • Vape shop
  • Vape store
  • Vape Juices
  • Vape E-liquids
  • Vape Devices
  • Vaping
  • Online vape shop

Although these are not keywords yet (and are so common they are probably are impossible to rank for) we’ll use them in the next step to come up with our actual keywords.

Perhaps the easiest way to find keywords after you have brainstormed is to use Google Suggest.  Input the topics into the google search bar and below will appear a list of keywords and phrases people are actively using related to your topics. For example, let’s say that we are searching: vape juices. If I input ‘vape juices’ into Google Suggest right now I would get the following keywords:

  • Vape juices online
  • Vapes juices with nicotine
  • Vape juices salt nic
  • Vape juices without nic
  • Vape juice flavors
  • Best vape juice online

The best thing about using Google Suggest is that you know for sure these are keywords that are actively being used by potential customers. All you have to do is use the topics you brainstormed and gather the best keywords.

If you still lack keywords you can also use the ‘Searches Related To’ section, which appears at the bottom of each Google search page. For example,  if I searched ‘vape eliquids’, at the very bottom of the page I would get the following keywords:

  • E liquid vape pen
  • Ejuice store
  • Best place to buy vape juice online
  • Vape juice cheap
  • Vape juice brands

As you can see using Google is a great tool that costs nothing to discover some initial keywords that you know for sure will work since they come up they are actively being used by users in Google.

Use Your Competitors Keywords with SEMrush

Another great way to come up with keywords you know will perform well is to indentify your competitors and borrow they keywords they use to rank and gain traffic. To do this, open a free account on www.SEMrush.com and when you have signed in simply input the website you want to find the keywords from. Once you have input the website you’ll get an estimate of how much traffic they drive and although it won’t be an exact report, it helps to gauge how successful their keywords are at driving traffic.

Once you figure out the top competitors that have more traffic than you are, on the page where you get the domain breakdown you’ll see a section called ‘Top Organic Keywords.’ In that section is a small blue box with the title ‘More details’- click this and it should take you to a new page where you can see the top nine organic keywords they use to rank high on Google. Obviously, if you want to see more results you’ll need a paid account on SEMrush.

It’s also important to note that once you have figured out some of the keywords your competitors rank for, you should also look at keywords they are ignoring. This will give you the advantage to come up with useful phrases and keywords they are not using to drive traffic to your website.

Step 4. Determining Which Keywords Work

Three factors we look for to determine whether a keyword is good or should be used are difficulty, search volume, and relevance. Let’s start with Difficulty.

Difficulty

Difficulty refers to how difficult it is to rank high for a certain term. So if your term for example is ‘vape shop’ it probably has many competitors gunning for the top spot and because many people are using it, only the website with the highest authority and traffic will probably show up on the Google page when someone searches for the term ‘vape shop’. This is why it’s important to look at the difficulty level of a keyword.

To find the difficulty of a keyword, use an SEO tool like SEMrush that allows you to look at the difficulty in their SEMrush Keyword Overview tool. If we were to use the example above of looking for the difficulty of ‘vape shop’, we would get a difficulty of 91 out of 100 which is very difficult. This is why you need keywords that have medium to low difficulty which many times tend to be long-tailed keywords.

If you’ve just started an online vape shop then you might want to focus on long-tailed keywords. Long-tailed keywords are made up of four or more words. A good example would be “Naked 100 vape juice online cheap” (by the way Naked 100 is one of the brands we sell wholesale which you can check out here) and although this keyword might have an extremely low search volume, it will have very a low difficulty level since it is so specific.

Search Volume

Search volume is easy to understand. It basically boils down to how many people search for the specific keyword or phrase. The higher the volume, the more traffic you can get.  However, this tends to vary from industry to industry, so that’s why after you have investigated a large number of your keywords, you should be able to come up with a decent search volume for online or physical vape shops.   Once more, use SEMrush to find the keyword search volume, which will show up on the same page you found the difficulty.

Relevance

Relevance is how relevant does your content answer or address the keyword. If, for example, the keyword is ‘Where can I buy tobacco free Air Factory E-liquid’ (a fantastic brand which, you guessed it, we also sell, and which you can check out here) your content should send them to a page where a wide selection of Air Factory products can be purchased.

Since Google made changes to the algorithm and put search intent as the main factor when it comes to ranking,  this means is that it’s no longer sufficient to include keywords in your content.  Your content must also address the topic clearly or provide answers even if the keywords are only used a couple of times. That’s why your keyword, while it should have a large search volume and low difficulty, should also generate coherent content that is relevant to the keyword itself.

Conclusion

While this guide is relatively short, we hope that you have found it extremely useful and learned how to find keywords for SEO. Remember that it’s not as important to overload your content with keywords (in fact keyword stuffing, as Google puts it, is penalized). Instead, create content that addresses the keywords.  Still look for keywords with low search volume and low to medium difficulty, as these give golden opportunities to rank in topics you haven’t thought of.
