Tobacco Cigarettes Kill Two Out of Three Users

We all know that smoking is deadly, but a new study is showing just how dangerous tobacco use can be. According to the latest research published in BMC Medicine, two out of three smokers will eventually die from tobacco related causes. The study was compiled by the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at the Australian National University. With over 204,000 participants, scientists tracked each case to study mortality rates.

Researchers found that men and women had equal mortality rates, but that the current smokers were typically younger and less likely to live in urban areas. The smokers had lower education levels and lower incomes compared to those that did not smoke. They were also less likely to have private health insurance. Smokers were also more likely to have a high body mass index and consume more than 15 alcoholic beverages weekly.

By the end of the study, the researchers found that smokers were almost three times more likely to die than those who never smoked. The good news is that smokers who managed to quit lowered their risk factors. The former smokers were 1.27 to 1.39 times more likely to die than never smokers. This is an important reminder that smoking is so deadly that it can put you at a higher risk for mortality even after you quit. The research team noticed that the risk of death declines more over time so the longer you can remain tobacco-free, the lower your mortality risk seems to be.

The scientists also noted that mortality rates were highly impacted by how many cigarettes the smokers used each day. Mortality risk doubled among those who smoked 1-14 cigarettes daily and it quadrupled among people that smoked more than 25 cigarettes daily.

If you are still smoking cigarettes, this is a timely reminder that it’s time to quit! Science has proven that electronic cigarettes are an effective way to kick the tobacco habit. When nicotine cessation products fail, ecigs work and we’ve heard countless stories from our readers to prove it.
