New Study: Inside Vaping Unlikely To Harm Bystanders

Another study released today shows that vaping is safer than traditional cigarettes in every way.

The Huffington Post recently reported that the study, which takes a closer look at the chemical particles that are exhaled when vaping, that shows that vaping indoors has little to no effect on bystanders in the same area. This puts a plug in the idea that there is such a thing as “second-hand” vape, a take on the all-too-common and more dangerous “second-hand smoke.”

The research was a collaborative effort between Fontem Ventures, EMPA Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, the Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania, and ETH Zurich the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. The focus of the study was to determine what, if any, effect chemical particles from vaping had in an indoor setting with bystanders around.

What the study found was pretty surprising — using closed-system vaping products, which are modeled to look like e-cigarettes and are currently on the market, the team discovered the liquid vapor produced by the product dissipated in seconds and left no effect on the air quality. The team tested the same products in rooms both with and without ventilation systems, finding the results to be exactly the same.

The results were released at the 4th Workplace and Indoor Aerosols Conference in Barcelona, where members of the team gathered to speak at length about the results. It is important to note that the lead scientist on this study is Professor Dainius Martuzevicius, who is a respected indoor quality expert and Vice Dean for Research at the Faculty of Chemical Technology at the Kaunas University of Technology. He explained the necessity for the study by pointing out that there is very little data showing how vaping affects those who are around people who vape.

In conclusion, Marc Michelsen, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications for Fontem Ventures, was quoted by Eureka Alert as saying: “This initial data supports the conclusions of Public Health England, the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health, Cancer Research UK, and others that vaping indoors is unlikely to pose an air quality issue to bystanders and non-vapers.”

Vapers have long suspected that vaping indoors had little to no effect to those around them when vaping, and here is just one study that provides proof. While this will not be the only study on the effect vaping has on bystanders, it has begun to showcase vaping as the industry knows it to be — still the safest alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes.
