FDA Announces New Upcoming Ecig Workshop

As the FDA works to determine upcoming regulations, it seems like they are trying to keep the conversation going with all interested parties. This week, they announced plans for an ecig workshop on December 10-11 to discuss scientific data that pertains to electronic cigarettes and health. The announcement said the workshop will primarily focus on science, labeling, packaging, and environmental issues related to vaping.

The FDA hopes that this will present an opportunity for scientists and medical professionals to continue discussions on the pros and cons of electronic cigarettes. However, they also said that the opinions expressed would not impact the decisions regarding regulation. “This is the first of a planned series of workshops intended to obtain information on e-cigarettes and the public health. The information presented and discussed during the workshop series is not intended to inform the agency’s rule making related to deeming additional products to be subject to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act,” the announcement said.

This first workshop is primarily targeting medical experts and scientists, but the FDA is inviting anyone interested in ecigs to attend and contribute to the discussions. In order to participate, you have to register by mail or online by November 25.

At this point, no one really knows how the FDA will approach the event or whether there will be any objectivity involved. There is a very real chance that they will limit who can attend to keep the crowd small and then they might pack the place out with anti-ecig viewpoints that will back their previous negative statements about vaping.  In prior events, the FDA seemed to bully vapers and representatives from small ecig start-ups by asking them impossible questions. However, they are yet to acknowledge information from real serious researchers that have found ground breaking and positive results while studying how vaping can impact smokers and help them quit.

If you wish to sign up for the workshop and show your support for electronic cigarettes in person, you can get more information on registration here.  Do you think the FDA has pure motives in holding this workshop or is it just another way to demonize ecigs by bringing in experts with slanted research?
